About
Doug prayed the “sinner’s prayer” in August 1985, motivated largely by a desire for “hellfire insurance” and a longing to be raptured. Throughout high school, he attended youth group and participated in short-term mission trips. While attending Houghton University, his heart increasingly turned toward missions and evangelism. During a ministry trip to New York City with NYSUM, Doug became convinced that he wanted to spend the rest of his life proclaiming the gospel.
In the late 1980s, after seeing a photograph of an aborted preborn child, Doug was deeply grieved and became involved in the pro-life movement. For approximately ten years, he was actively involved in Way of the Master evangelism in Rochester, New York, before moving to Georgia, where he became involved in a church he would later come to believe was a false church.
Looking back, Doug describes those years as a time of having “zeal without knowledge.” Although he professed faith in Christ and was deeply involved in Christian ministry, he now considers himself to have been a false convert until 2020.
That year, while listening to a sermon on Isaiah 53:10 “Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin” the gospel became clear to him in a way it never had before. Doug believes that, at that moment, by the grace of God, he was regenerated and truly came to understand and embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ. He subsequently left the charismatic church and began following the doctrines of grace and the biblical truths of Reformed theology.
In 2021–2022, Doug was ministering with his local church at an abortion facility when a brother in Christ invited him to attend the George Whitefield Fellowship with SFOI and Bill Adams. Through this fellowship week, Doug became increasingly convinced that God was calling him to pursue full-time open-air gospel preaching.
Since 2022, Doug has faithfully proclaimed the gospel in the open air at local Walmart stores, sporting events, festivals, abortion mills, college campuses, and other public venues. His desire is to faithfully preach Christ crucified, call sinners to repentance and faith, and make the gospel known wherever God provides an opportunity and is able to around his Piano Tuning work.
Since 2022, Doug has also been taking classes with Heath Pucel through Keep Your Finger in the Text, an open-air preaching and Bible exposition ministry that encourages preachers to commit themselves to faithful expository preaching in the open air. Through this ongoing study and training, Doug continues to grow in his understanding of Scripture and his commitment to proclaiming the Word of God faithfully and clearly in public evangelism.
