5 Recommended Resources on Honorable Living

The concept of honor has fallen on hard times, especially in Western culture. Or perhaps it might be more accurate to say that many of us live with a lopsided view of honor: we all want to be honored and respected, but we’re not nearly as eager to honor and respect others. Yet God’s Word is replete with references to whom and what we are to honor. The culture of His Word—not the culture of our world—is what we as His redeemed aspire to. Each of the resources below, curated by the Ligonier editorial team, focuses on a different facet of biblical honor that can assist believers as they seek to grow in giving honor to whom honor is due.

Principles of Conduct: Aspects of Biblical Ethics by John Murray

This work by one of the most renowned Reformed theologians of the twentieth century is among the best introductions to Christian ethics produced in the past one hundred years. John Murray unfolds the core biblical teaching on central ethical issues, helping readers think through them in a manner that is faithful to the Lord. Murray explains what it looks like to honor labor, marriage, the truth, and even God Himself while addressing the foundations of biblical ethics and the relationship between law and grace. Dr. R.C. Sproul regarded this book as one of the most influential books in his life and ministry.

The Commandment We Forgot by Tim Challies

The fifth commandment, “Honor your father and mother,” is foundational for honoring God and producing a well-ordered society. In this helpful booklet, Tim Challies considers the fifth commandment and its application to the Christian life.

In Christ Alone: Living the Gospel-Centered Life by Sinclair B. Ferguson

Revelation 4:12 proclaims, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” Christ Jesus is worthy of the highest honor because of who He is and what He has done. This book explores the worthiness of Christ.

The Masculine Mandate: God’s Calling to Men by Richard D. Phillips

What does it look like to be a man worthy of honor—a husband, father, or son worthy of respect in the family, in the church, and in the culture? This book seeks to answer that question, describing the high calling that God has given to men and exhorting them to fulfill it.

Authority by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

The mantra of our day is “Question authority.” Yet that attitude has not produced a harmonious society; only one full of discord and disrespect. This book shows that this problem can be solved only as we honor the authority of Jesus.
